Photosynthesis Problem Set 2

Problem 8 Tutorial: C4 plants

What is a property of C4 plants, but not C3 plants?

C4 Photosynthesis

In C4 plants, carbon dioxide in mesophyll cells of the leaf is first converted to the 4-carbon compound oxaloacetate by the following reaction catalyzed by PEP carboxylase:

Oxaloacetate and related 4-carbon compounds are then transported to the bundle sheath cells where the CO2 is released, and enters the Calvin-Benson cycle.
