Question 4: Calculating pH

Tutorial to help answer the question

What is the pH of a 10 - 3 M solution of HCl?

Tutorial

Calculating pH from [H +] Concentration

pH is the negative log of the hydrogen ion concentration, i.e.

pH = -log [H +]

HCl is a strong acid. It completely dissociates in water, i.e.

HCl [H +] + Cl -

A 0.3 M HCl solution has a [H +] of 10 - 3 M. Therefore, the pH of a 10 - 3 M solution of HCl is

-log [10 - 3] = 3
