Diffusion, Osmosis and
Cell Membranes
Objectives
In this unit of instruction,
the students will explore some of the properties and processes of the
cell membrane, and in the process acquire an understanding of some basic
concepts of physical science. Upon completion of this unit, each student
should be able to:
- understand the functional role of the cell membrane in the survival
of the cell.
- understand the basic mechanisms of passive transport through the
cell membrane
- describe and demonstrate basic principles of equilibrium using
appropriate models
- describe diffusion using the kinetic behavior of gases as a model
- measure the rate of diffusion of a gas (Graham's Law)
- describe osmosis using equilibrium and diffusion concepts
- observe and describe the effects of various solutions of varying
concentration on the tonicity of plant and animal cells
- mrelate the concepts of osmosis and diffusion to the environmental
requirements of plant and animal cells
- oplan and execute an experiment to test a hypothesis regarding
osmosis in red blood cells
- collect, record, and analyze data from experimental procedures
