What's Wrong with the Plants?

SUGGESTED TIME

Activity 1: 2-3 class periods, including time for discussion
Activity 2: 2-3 class periods (including discussion) but will require observations over an extended period of time
depending on the type of plants used. Average: about 4 weeks
Activity 3: should take no more than 2 class periods but will take about 2 weeks to complete out of class.
The presentations should take 3-5 days of class time but will vary with class size
Post Lab: one class period
Term/concept Introduction: 2-3 class periods.

 

MATERIALS

infected and non-infected mature cucumber,
tomato or eggplant plants
non-resistant seedling plants (same as above)
live nematode eggs
sterilized potting soil
ä Styrofoam cups or small pots
small test tubes with stoppers
slides w/ coverslips
ä Scotties tissues
water
**anything students may need for their specific
experimental design.

EQUIPMENT

dissecting & compound microscopes
culture or petri dishes
hand lenses
covered ä Tupperware-like sandwich boxes
wire mesh screen
dissecting probes
pointed forceps
pipettes
light source
centrifuge (if available)
(low speed; swinging bucket rotor)
