Must Have Books

A textbook—this course is not textbook driven, but it is nice for the students to have one for easy reference.

1. Mine is: Sumich, James L. An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life. (6th Ed.) Wm. C.Brown Publishers, Dubuque, Iowa, 1996.

2.
Brusca, Richard. Common Intertidal Invertebrates of the Gulf of California. University of Arizona Press, Tucson, AZ, 1980. (This edition is out of print—but I hear he is coming out with another edition soon. BUY IT!! U of A Press is(520) 621-1441

3. Morholt, E. and Brandwein, P. F. A Sourcebook for the Biological Sciences. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, NY, 1986.

4. Niesen, Thomas M. The Marine Biology Coloring Book. HarperCollins, NY, 1982.

Other Books

1. Cousteau, Jacques. The Ocean World. Harry N. Abrams, NY, 1979.
2. Kerstich, A. N. Sea of Cortez Marine Invertebrates. Sea Challengers, Monterey, CA, 1989.

4. Warr, D. Seashore Biology Notes. Winter Publishing Co., Tucson, AZ, 1987.
5. A book called Marine Biology for the Landlocked Classroom exists, but I don’t know any more bibliographic information.

Field Guides

1. Abbott, R. T. Seashells of the World. Golden Press, NY, 1962.
2. Boschung, H. T., et al. National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Fishes, Whales and Dolphins. Knopf, NY, 1995. (Audubon also has an excellent guide to Western Coast invertebrates).
3. Dance, S. P. Shells. Dorling Kindersley, NY, 1992.
4. Seikman, L. The Great Outdoors Book of Shells. Great Outdoors Publishing,
5. St. Petersburg, FL, 1965.

Videos

The Audubon Society and the National Geographic Society have great marine biology related videos. I have ordered some, and I rent some. I also found out recently that it is cheaper to order a video through Blockbuster, (if they can get it), than to order it through some company’s flier that you got in your mailbox at school.

Catalina Island

The students and I do a LOT of fundraising so that they can do this trip. I have never had a student that could not afford to go because of all the work we do. Contact me if you want information on fundraising for a trip.

I personally recommend these private smaller organizations—not the overcrowded and overused companies that most school groups employ.

1. Certified Yachting Expeditions: contact John Losey 1-888-whales-5

2. Marine Science Adventures: contact Annie MacAulay 626-403-2169

Me (not that I am a fantastic resource, but in case you have questions)

Dchstigger@cs.com Also, please email me any activities that you have!!

I also did my thesis on the intertidal in Rocky Point. If you are interested in it for a reference, the citation for my is:

Chandler, M. A. 1999. Population changes in a Northern Gulf of California rocky intertidal invertebrate community before and after the 1997-1998 ENSO event. M.S. thesis. University of Arizona, Tucson.
