Evolution and the Early Earth (BIOC 654) (online course)Have you ever wanted to go back in time to see the conditions that led to the development of life on Earth? Sadly, we can't teach that class yet. We can, however, discuss some very up-to-date best guesses at what the conditions were on the early Earth, how they contributed to the development of life, and how those early life forms diversified into the multitude of organisms we know today. We'll also consider the search for life on other planets and discover what scientists are looking for when probing for signatures of extraterrestrial life. This class covers the science that unifies our understanding of evolution and the early Earth. The course materials include several lectures presented by scientists at the University of Arizona as part of the College of Science Public Lecture Series, as well as a selection of readings and activities from a variety of other sources. Courtesy of the AZ START grant, funded by Science Foundation Arizona, in-service Arizona teachers will receive a $450 scholarship towards the cost of this online course. May 19-June 22, 2008.
