- BIOC 570 Applications of Cell & Molecular Biology for Teachers (formerly BIOC 623c Biology Update 1: Molecular & Cellular Biology topics). Principles of cell and molecular biology with a focus on applications and current research appropriate for secondary school biology teachers. This totally online course is designed for prospective and in-service science teachers who need to develop a deeper understanding of central ideas in cell and molecular biology. Core topics in the course include structure-function relationships, gene expression, membrane biology, cell structure, and regulation of cell division. Syllabus (including textbook info). Course may co-convene with BIOC 470. Instructor: Lisa Rezende, Ph.D. Summer Session I (June 4-July 5). 3 units of credit. Cost: $1,311.50
- BIOC 571 Ecological Principles for Teachers (formerly BIOC 623d Biology Update 2: Ecology & Evolutionary Biology topics). Principles of ecology with a focus on applications and current research appropriate for secondary school biology teachers. This totally online course is designed for prospective and in-service science teachers who wish to develop a deeper understanding of ecology. Basic themes include how organisms interact with other organisms and their environment, factors that influence the size and stability of populations, how geography affects biodiversity, and the application of these principles to current ecological issues including global warming and invasive species. Syllabus (including textbook info). Course may co-convene with BIOC 471. Instructor: Maureen Sieberg, Ph.D. Summer Session I (June 4-July 5). 3 units of credit. Cost: $1,311.50
- BIOC 572 Advanced Genetics for Teachers (formerly BIOC 650 Genetics for Teachers). Principles of genetics with a focus on applications and current research appropriate for secondary school biology teachers. This totally online course is designed for prospective and in-service science teachers who wish to develop a deeper understanding of central ideas in genetics. Core topics include the molecular basis for inheritance, basic descriptive genetics and the mathematical patterns that explain genetic patterns, gene regulation, genomics, and the use of genetic technologies to address human problems. Syllabus (including textbook info). Course may co-convene with BIOC 472. Instructor: Lisa Elfring, Ph.D. Summer Session II (July 9-August 8). 3 units of credit. Cost: $1,311.50
- BIOC 633 Secondary Biology Lab Curricula. What are the characteristics that most great instructional activities share? How can you modify an exsisting activity to increase study involvement, interest, and understanding? How can you make use of current events to communicate with students about the fun and complexity of doing science? And how do national and state science standards drive your curricular choices? In this totally online course, we will explore these ideas by using and discussing exemplary curricula taken from a variety of sources. The emphasis will be for teachers to adapt classroom activities to reflect the results of research on teaching and learning in science and to promote greater student understanding in biology. Syllabus available soon. Textbook: "Hard-to-Teach Biology Concepts: A Framework to Deepen Student Understanding" by Susan Koba with Anne Tweed, NSTA Press; may be ordered through the UA Bookstore or through NSTA (10% discount for members). Instructor: TBA. Summer Session II (July 9-August 8). 3 units of credit. Cost: $1,311.50
