Topics in Muscle BiologyBIOC 597c 002, 1 unit of graduate-level credit The media has recently been flooded with stories about Steroid-use in the Majors, four cases of Botox injections gone wrong, and new Gene Therapy approaches for Muscular Dystrophy. Sensational stories all, but what they also have in common is that they are all issues of Muscle Biology. This course will cover these and other topics currently the focus of media attention. Coverage of each will start with the analysis of a recent media article intended for the general public and the questions it raises, include some lecture presentation of the essential basic physiology involved and culminate with discussion of relevant primary research articles to help address the issues raised. This course will run 5 consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept 28th running through and including October 26th. For more information, email Dr. Cindy Rankin in the Dept of Physiology, or telephone 520-621-3104. Courtesy of a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes, in-service middle and high school teachers will receive a $135 scholarship towards the cost of this course (1 unit costs $269.23). Teachers not currently enrolled in a degree program at the University of Arizona may take this class as a non-degree student. To enroll, email Ellie Warder or call (520) 621-5903. To avoid late penalties, you must be enrolled in your courses and have paid all your registration fees by August 22, 2005. The
