Step 4. Thesis Research Topic Approval

Deadline: April 30 prior to second summer

Working closely with your thesis supervisor, develop a description of your anticipated research. Schedule your first committee meeting early (by March 15) in the Spring semester before you begin to do your research. At this meeting, you should:

  • At least 1 month prior to the meeting, provide a 2-page description of your proposed research to your committee members.
  • Briefly (30 min.) present your research plan.
  • Discuss the research plan.
  • If approved, turn in Research Topic Approval form and a copy of the 2-page research proposal to Graduate Studies Committee (Ellie Warder) by April 30.

Note: 1) The committee is more likely to approve your proposed research topic if you and your thesis supervisor have already discussed and revised it several times. 2) It is imperative that you schedule this committee meeting well in advance of the deadline, since the committee may ask you to revise your research proposal and meet again to discuss it!
