Plant Biology For Teachers (BIOC 655)
In this class, you will:
- Explain the unique features of plant cells and plant-based macromolecules.
- Describe basic plant anatomy and morphology with an emphasis on angiosperms.
- Understand important plant growth and development processes including the production and influence of plant hormones.
- Explain plant reproduction and the alternation of generations.
- Understand the fundamental biochemical pathways of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
- Explain inheritance of traits using angiosperms as model systems.
- Distinguish between characteristics of members of the Kingdom Plantae including Bryophytes, Ferns, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms; understand plant classification.
- Summarize and interpret plant biology information research articles and popular media.
- Learn techniques for transferring plant biology content to students grades 5-12.
To be offered in Fall 2009 as an online course. Dates: September 21-December 11, 2009. 3 units of graduate-level credit. Instructor: Maureen Sieberg, Ph.D.
Course Syllabus
You may take this course as a degree OR non-degree graduate student at the University of Arizona. Courtesy of a grant from Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz), in-service Arizona secondary school science teachers will receive a $600 scholarship towards the cost of the course (currently $1,313).
